What Is Chicago Appleseed Center for Fair Courts?
Chicago Appleseed Center for Fair Courts is an impact research, education, and advocacy organization that works to achieve fundamental, systemic reform by addressing policies and practices that relate to social justice and government effectiveness issues. Chicago Appleseed is an advocacy hub that leverages best practices and the unique insights of pro bono legal professionals, policy experts, community members, other volunteers, staff, and interns to make the court system more equitable, accessible, and effective. Chicago Appleseed works in alliance with various community-based advocacy organizations to identify barriers to justice for underrepresented individuals, families, and groups in the Cook County court system. Created in 1970 as the nonprofit arm of the Chicago Council of Lawyers (Council), Chicago Appleseed began life as Fund for Justice. In 1997, the Council and Fund for Justice were approached by Appleseed in Washington D.C. to become their Chicago affiliate in a nationwide network of public interest law centers working collaboratively to promote social justice. To this day, Chicago Appleseed and Chicago Council of Lawyers work hand-in-hand in collaboration for justice, focusing particularly in the areas of criminal justice, immigration, family law, and civil rights, liberties, and access to justice.
