What Is Carolina Skiff?
Carolina Skiff manufactures fiberglass-reinforced fishing boats used for both inshore and offshore. The first process step is to prep and wax the fiberglass mold, and then apply a high-gloss mixture known as a gelcoat, which provides the exterior finish of the boat. A skin coat, which is a thin layer of fiberglass and liquid polyester resin, is then applied over the gelcoat. This fiberglass laminate must also be manually rolled to smooth out the glass cloth and remove air bubbles. Once dried, a patented method of construction using foam logs is placed in the unfinished boat to enhance both floatation and structural stability. A fiberglass mat is then placed on top of the foam logs within the hull of the boat. Another polyester-based laminate coat mixed with chopped fiberglass spray is applied over this laminate. As with the skin coat, this laminate must also be "rolled-out" manually. Following the final lamination, each boat is inspected for quality purposes. Upon passing the inspection, the boats are pulled out from the fiberglass mold and brought to an enclosed booth where grinding and buffing processes smooth out the fiberglass laminate. Lastly, a final gel coat formulated with waxes is applied to the interior of the boat to provide a glossy appearance and textured finish. Interior components, such as front and rear decks, consoles, and seats, are also manufactured at Carolina Skiff, using laminating processes similar to those described above. Carolina Skiff's pollution prevention program is promoted throughout the company as an integral element of their operating philosophy. Production employees are involved and kept abreast of all ongoing projects through communications during daily safety meetings. The pollution prevention team, which has representatives from every area of the plant, meets once a month to identify pollution prevention opportunities and to work toward practical solutions. An incentive-based program is in place at Carolina Skiff to increase participation and enhance awareness of the pollution prevention program. Employees who submit pollution prevention alternatives that are implemented receive recognition through posting of their name in the breakroom and can receive up to $50.00 worth of gift certificates. P2AD's Pollution Prevention Partners (P3) program is open to all Georgia companies that are committed to a successful pollution prevention program and are deemed to be in environmental compliance. The program has three levels: Entry, Achievement, and Model.
