What Is Canby School District 86?

It's been a busy time in the world of K-12 mathematics for our district, as well as at state and national levels. Canby's mathematics teachers have maintained their focus and alignment on high quality standards and instruction. Districtwide, instruction has been aligned to the 2007 Oregon Mathematics Standards. As our teachers were diligently planning and teaching to these standards, the Oregon Department of Education made two significant decisions that further impact our instruction, assessment, teachers and students. One decision was that the State Board of Education recently adopted the Common Core State Standards for K-12 Language Arts and Mathematics. Oregon now joins 45 other states that have adopted these standards, which will be phased in over the next several years. The State Board also approved the adoption of new math performance standards, called "cut scores", starting with the 2011-12 school year. This means that students in grades 3 through 8 will then need to earn a higher score on the state math test in order to meet or exceed these standards. The chart linked below demonstrates comparison score examples indicating the higher cut scores students will need to meet next year. This change is significant. It's important to note that the adjustment to new targets means our success rate in state assessment data the first year will not reach the success rate of prior years and will similarly impact teachers and students throughout the state of Oregon. I know that Canby School District teachers will make every effort to focus their instruction on math understanding, fluency and problem solving with the intention of helping their students meet the higher scoring target next year.
