What Is Bird Studies Canada?
Bird Studies Canada (BSC) is Canada?s leading science-based bird conservation organization. Our mission is to conserve wild birds of Canada through sound science, on-the-ground actions, innovative partnerships, public engagement, and science-based advocacy. Each year, roughly 40,000 volunteer ?Citizen Scientists?? across the country contribute to BSC?s research and monitoring programs. Scientists and concerned citizens work together, gathering data that BSC?s researchers analyze for population trends and shifts. BSC?s work has a direct impact on provincial, national, and international conservation action. REGIONAL: Bird Studies Canada has six provincial offices where staff coordinate programs such as provincial breeding bird atlases, species recovery plans, and youth education initiatives that inspire the next generation of biologists, birdwatchers, and Citizen Scientists. NATIONAL: Birds help us assess the health of our environment. The decline of a single species is a tragedy in itself, but can also indicate larger causes for concern. Monitoring and early detection of declines in common birds is critical in determining priorities for conservation. BSC maintains Canada?s National Data Centre on birds, and is the primary source of information for researchers seeking field data. INTERNATIONAL: Bird Studies Canada is a Canadian co-partner of BirdLife International, the world?s largest partnership for nature conservation. One key partnership initiative is the global Important Bird Areas program (www.ibacanada.ca). There are 600 Important Bird Areas in Canada alone. BSC?s volunteers join as ?Caretakers?? to monitor and maintain these critical habitats for birds.
