More than two decades of our research combined with decades of scientific research performed by others has shown unequivocally that addiction is not a disease and treating it as such has systematically destroyed generations of people who are told they cannot control themselves and their behaviors, and therefore do not have the power to change. In order to overcome substance use and other behavioral problems, people must first believe they do have control and thus have the power to change their own lives.
