What Is BW Wilson?

B.W. Wilson Paper Company was founded in 1904 as a wholesale fine paper company serving Virginia and North Carolina. Ben W. Wilson was president and through his aggressive leadership, the company continually expanded until the Depression. After the Depression, with the help of loyal vendors, B.W. Wilson was revitalized. Herbert Adams was elected president in 1931. The company flourished during the next ten years, and by the time World War II arrived, the company had reached a pinnacle in sales. A new five-story warehouse was purchased to further handle the increasing demand for larger inventories. In 1970, Lawrence Rauppius successfully negotiated the purchase of B.W. Wilson. Under his leadership the company tripled in sales within two years. Two acres of property were bought in the West End of Richmond and a 45,000 square foot warehouse was built. As sales and profits continued to grow, further need for expansion became apparent and in 1978 a branch was opened in Chesapeake, Virginia. As a pioneer in office automation, B.W. Wilson was the first wholesale paper company to become fully computerized. Recognizing the new era of computers and computer-related products, the company, in 1983, created a new and separate division. Aptly named "Office Tomorrow", this division concentrated on sales of computer paper, diskettes, ribbons, and other magnetic media. Such a diversity of product sales and innovative marketing concepts raised the eyebrows of the "old line" conservative paper people. In 1985, "Office Tomorrow" was renamed "Information System Supplies (I.S.S.)" and, with its own specialized sales force, experience ongoing success. After servicing the North Carolina Territory from Virginia for more than three quarters of a Century, a Branch in Burlington NC was opened in 1991. B.W. Wilson experienced exponential growth in the 1990's and added two addition branches in Lynchburg VA in 1999 and Raleigh NC in 2002. Today B.W. Wilson operates 5 branches including Raleigh and Burlington, NC, along with Chesapeake, Lynchburg, and Richmond Virginia. Our company has been a reflection of the strong communities, people, and companies we service and our commitment to customer satisfaction will continue to be the overriding emphasis that is placed on our company. Thank you for your Business!
