What Is BURN?
BURN was founded in 2011 in order to save lives and forests in the developing world through the design and manufacture of clean-burning cookstoves. But the story of BURN originally began in 1990 when our Founder, Peter Scott, witnessing the deforestation from fuelwood production for cooking in DRC, committed his life to save forests. And, since 1997, has been working toward achieving this goal through the dissemination of super fuel-efficient cookstoves. In 2010, after 13 years working as a cookstove consultant in Central America and sub-Saharan Africa, Peter launched Burn Manufacturing Co on Vashon Island, a small island near Seattle, Washington. Here he assembled a world-class team of designers and engineers, who were not only committed to designing the world's best cookstoves but to also manufacturing them locally. In 2013, BURN launched its first assembly facility in Nairobi and in 2014 launched its first full manufacturing facility, the first and only one of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa. BURN is now the only vertically integrated modern cookstove company in Sub-Saharan Africa. Currently, our facility has a capacity of 45,000 stoves per month and employs over 300 people, 60% of whom are women. When BURN first launched in 2011, there was almost zero faith in the cookstove sector to deliver tangible benefits. Since that time, BURN has revolutionized the sector, showing that clean cookstoves can deliver and are, in fact, one of the most cost-effective ways to make a social, financial or environmental impact. As the recent UC Berkeley study shows, a $40 investment in the Jikokoa generates a staggering $1000 return for society. Not only is BURN achieving these results, but doing it as a sustainable and profitable business. What more could you ask? In the next three years, we will be expanding our sales and distribution to Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, DRC, Nigeria, and Ghana and increase our production capacity in Kenya from 45,000 to 120,000 units per month.
