What Is Athens Paper Company?

Athens Paper Company, Inc. is a privately-owned company, founded in 1952, headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee. The two principal owners, M.H. (Bud) Chamberlain, Jr. and W. Donald (Don) Jenkins, Jr., were previously executives for Champion Papers International, Bud being Vice President of merchandising and Don as Director of Operations. Their travels and mill connections led them throughout the United States in the area of responsibility which involved 52 paper merchants from coast to coast. Tired of this extensive traveling and anxious to settle in one location, Chamberlain and Jenkins purchased Athens Paper Company in Nashville and opened for business on January 1, 1968. Both gentlemen began their careers in Nashville which is the main publishing center for seven of the world's largest religious affiliations as well as many other varieties of the printing and publishing trade. Their knowledge of this industry, along with national and international connections to mill sources and publishing requirements, made entry into their new business an appealing venture. Their story has been success after success. Beginning with an old three-story tobacco warehouse in downtown Nashville, Athens has grown from a original staff of 12 employees and one facility to the current 300 plus employees with eleven office/warehouse units and seven publishing sales offices. As well as all the above, Athens in Nashville was one of the first merchants in the region to employ full-time Sales Promotion assistance for advertising agencies and freelance designers. They have faithfully supported the creative field as a successful marketing force for discriminating paper consumers. Mr. Chamberlain passed away in June of 2005, but Mr. Jenkins along with the next generation of Chamberlains and Jenkins are proud to lead Athens Paper into the 21st century as the fastest-growing fine paper in the Mid South. With an emphasis on customer service and deep inventories, Athens remains the first choice for their customers in the region.
