AM General makes G.I. Joe's and Arnold Schwarzenegger's favorite rides -- the HUMVEE and the HUMMER. Foreign and US militaries use the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HUMVEE) for battlefield transport of personnel, supplies, and equipment. And, after it gained attention in the Persian Gulf War, AM General introduced the HUMMER H1, a more comfortable civilian version, which it builds for General Motors. The unwieldly width of the H1 led to the introduction of the more parking-space and traffic-friendly HUMMER H2. AM General's General Engine P oducts subsidiary makes 6.5-liter diesel engines for automotive, military, and marine OEM markets. AM General is part of billionaire Ira Rennert's Renco Group.
