ViaCyte is a privately-held regenerative medicine company developing novel cell replacement therapies as potential long-term diabetes treatments that will reduce or eliminate the need for blood glucose monitoring, insulin administration, and the risks of hypoglycemia and diabetes-related complications. ViaCyte has two products in clinical development. The first is called the PEC-Direct product candidate, which delivers proprietary pancreatic progenitor cells (PEC-01 cells) in a non-immunoprotective device. The PEC-Direct product candidate is being developed for type 1 diabetes (T1D) patients who have hypoglycemia unawareness, recurrent severe hypoglycemic episodes, and/or extreme glycemic lability. The second product is called the PEC-Encap (also known as VC-01) product candidate.
