About
Ross School is a truly unique learning community dedicated to preparing children to participate fully as informed, highly capable citizens of the 21st century. Our students study a global cultural historical narrative that connects the past to the present. They gain experience working collaboratively with other students around the corner and around the globe to consider and solve complex problems using knowledge and skills from across academic disciplines. Our required academic programs, electives, wellness programs, service projects, independent studies and college counseling program ensure that Ross students can actively engage in a future we know will be filled with issues that require fluency in new technologies, cooperation and communication with people of many different backgrounds and areas of expertise. Every year our students undertake numerous projects that represent the school's motto: know thyself in order to serve. Whether it's rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, providing AIDS education and character building programs to orphans in South Africa, collecting clothing and food for local charities, or designing curriculum for other students to learn about rainforest ecology or world religions, Ross School students and their teachers continuously identify and address local and global issues. The world is our classroom, and we strive to care for it just as we do our own two beautiful campuses in Bridgehampton and East Hampton. After teaching in two poverty-stricken neighborhoods in Managua, Nicaragua and then in museums and schools in New York City, I joined Ross as a history and math teacher in 1995. It has been an incredible experience to participate in the growth and development of the school. In my first year we had 30 students in just a few rooms in one building nestled in an oak forest in East Hampton. The student body has increased 20-fold since then, and our community programs and summer camp serve hundreds of additional children and adults each year. Our original campus - the Upper School campus for grades five through twelve - now has five incredible academic and administrative buildings, the Center for Well-Being, two playing fields with an additional two fields, a baseball/softball diamond, six tennis courts and a field house are expected to be completed during the 2008-2009 academic year. Our lovely Lower School campus in Bridgehampton, for students in pre-nursery through grade four, includes four academic buildings, a spacious field house, a small farm and numerous playgrounds and open areas for outdoor activities. While I am proud of the incredible programs and facilities we have built together over the years, my favorite aspect of Ross School is the people. Our faculty is outstanding; never before have I had the pleasure of working with such passionate teachers. They are experts in their respective fields and model life long learning on a daily basis as they engage in new areas of study along side their colleagues and students. Ross School students are a diverse and energetic group and include a growing contingent of boarding students. They have a wide variety of interests and strengths and come from all the local towns as well as several other countries. The Steven J. Ross Scholarship Fund and other sources of financial aid make it possible for us to ensure that all students interested in Ross School have the opportunity to attend. In addition to the efforts of our faculty and students, Ross School's success is due largely to the support and involvement of our parents and Board of Trustees, including our generous founder and Board President, Courtney Sale Ross. It takes a whole community of people with a shared vision for the future and a plan for getting there to create a school like Ross School. From the beginning it has been our goal to not only serve our own children, but to transform education for others as well.
