About
Human Rights Watch established a presence in Southern California more than a decade ago, convinced that the unique population, influence and resources of the region could be mobilized to defend human rights around the world. In Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, a vibrant community of supporters are engaged in raising awareness of human rights abuses, building financial support for Human Rights Watch, and strengthening HRW's local research and advocacy. The California Committee South was co-founded by Jane Olson and Stanley Sheinbaum in 1989. Members make a financial commitment to Human Rights Watch and participate regularly in outreach events and advocacy campaigns. Women's Rights Committee volunteers support the work of the Women's Rights Division of Human Rights Watch and raise local awareness of violence, discrimination and other abuses against women around the world. Founded in 1997, the Young Advocates are a group of young professionals and students in their 20's and 30's committed to supporting Human Rights Watch and improving human rights conditions locally and worldwide. Knowing that millions of children worldwide continue to be denied basic human rights, the Student Task Force brings together high school students from the Los Angeles community to advocate for children's rights and support the work of the Children's Rights Division of Human Rights Watch.
