Shared_Studios is a multidisciplinary arts, design and technology collective focused on carving wormholes throughout the world. We ground the connective potential of new technology in physical spaces to create more accessible, secure, and meaningful encounters between diverse populations.
Our first initiative is Portals. Portals are gold shipping containers that offer immersive audio-visual technology inside. When you enter one, you come face-to-face with someone in another container live, full-body, and the two of you converse as if in the same room.
Since launch in December 2014, Portals have connected over 150,000 people around the world in dialogue. Portals now exist in Herat, Afghanistan; Isfahan, Iran; Tehran, Iran; Mexico City, Mexico; El Progreso, Honduras; Havana, Cuba; Kigali, Rwanda; Erbil, Iraq; Berlin, Germany; and the Za'atari Refugee Camp in Jordan. Through Portals artists have collaborated; families have been reunited; refugees have engaged diplomats and more. Portals have been covered by global news outlets. Notable guests including Barack Obama, Sergey Brin, John Kerry and Ewan McGregor have participated.
