About
Annie Wright School offers a unique and historically distinguished educational opportunity in the Pacific Northwest. Since its founding in the fall of 1884, the School has brought together young women of diverse backgrounds to study and live together in an environment designed to focus on each girl's needs-at a particularly vulnerable and critical time in her life. It takes both courage and wisdom for a girl and her family to make the choice of single gender education, but the results of making that choice are tangible and dramatic. We prepare girls extraordinarily well for college, offering small classes, motivated and independent-minded peers, an exceptional faculty, and an evolving curriculum to meet the particular requirements of this century. More importantly, we prepare girls for a lifetime of learning, instilling in our students genuine curiosity and the courage to ask questions, seek creative answers and meet the challenges of a rapidly-changing, complex and culturally-diverse world. As a boarding school, Annie Wright does not limit learning to the academic day. Students from a variety of countries and backgrounds form a 24-hour community with a distinct firsthand knowledge about what it means to live with a broad global understanding. Because students and faculty live together in the residence department, discussion and discovery continue naturally outside the classroom, leading to more personal relationships and a deeper understanding among people from varying cultures and beliefs. The girls we teach are tomorrow's leaders. At Annie Wright, girls practice leadership in every avenue: academic, athletic, extracurricular and co-curricular. All our team captains and club and class presidents are girls. Beyond the academics and athletics, we work with our girls to be models of civility, compassion, and activism because we believe these are the cornerstones of true leadership. At Annie Wright, we practice leadership and citizenship in a variety of ways. Foremost among these is our Honor Code, a code of behavioral expectations that commits members of our community to honesty and integrity. We hold regular class, club, advisory group and all-community meetings to allow our students to chart courses for themselves and for various groups throughout the academic year. Nonsectarian but encouraging of spiritual questioning, we also hold regular chapel services to explore a variety of religious traditions as well as other matters of community life. We want our students to leave Annie Wright with an abiding concern for society and a sense of responsibility to people and causes beyond themselves. To this end, we require some commitment to service from each individual, and we plan ongoing service opportunities as part of the regular schedule. "From Strength to Strength," the motto of the Upper School at Annie Wright, lies at the heart of all we do. By helping girls recognize and celebrate the strengths of girlhood, we can depend upon our graduates to become women of strength, women who can truly make lasting and significant improvements in the world.
