About
In 1940, with a vision of something greater, William T. Cheesman and John Storb began Penn Line Service, Inc. It started humbly, as a single office housed in the dining room of Cheesman's Scottdale residence. Later, the office relocated to the First National Bank building in Scottdale, then to a house on the corner of Scottdale's Grant and Pittsburgh Streets. Eventually, Penn Line Service moved to Scottdale Avenue where the main office, as well as maintenance and storage buildings, stands today. During the early years, previous experience in utility contracting led the company to concentrate its initial efforts on line construction, but it wasn't much longer before the founders' progressive thinking and enthusiastic action propelled the firm forward. In 1945, Robert Reese came aboard Penn Line to serve as CEO and spurred us to include tree trimming and right-of-way clearing among our services. The following year we pioneered a system of herbicide brush spraying - a system now standard throughout the industry.Tremendous growth was experienced during the first ten years. We expanded from serving 22 counties in Western Pennsylvania to later include Central Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Then in 1956, the company flourished in support of the government's development of the Interstate Highway Construction Program. This project of planting honeysuckle and crown vetch on the slopes of the highway cuts was the germination of Penn Line Service seeding and mulching work. An environmentally conscious Penn Line Service was also quick to acknowledge the increasing concern for environmental protection in the 60's. During this time, Howard C. Ferguson assumed the presidency of Penn Line Service and led the company's response to mine and swamp reclamation. Ferguson's work is continuing with the same interest and excitement today. Penn Line Service's subsidiaries and affiliates have been another of our success stories. In 1955, Penn Line organized Forest Construction, an expert in electrical construction for mines and in 1984, acquired Tri-County Electric, a specialist in commercial and industrial wiring. Penn Line Construction Company was formed in 1990 to further refine our work in the electric line construction arena.Today Penn Line Service continues to thrive. We employ approximately 800 employees and our modern fleet of equipment (which presently includes over 650 road and off road units) is maintained by our own full-time maintenance shop. Most significantly - we now serve over 300 customers throughout New York, Michigan, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware,, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee and the District of Columbia. And we're still growing.
