Headquartered in Richmond, Special Olympics Virginia has a network of eight offices that support athletes, families and volunteers in school and community-based programs across the state.
Our mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
Our programs, however, are about more than just sports. Through work in health, education, community building and sports, Special Olympics is addressing inactivity, injustice, intolerance and social isolation by encouraging and empowering people with intellectual disabilities. We are the leaders of the Dignity Revolution. Join us!
"Globally, people with intellectual differences cannot boast a great success story around the world. Most live in poverty. Most are denied education. Most are unemployed. Most are lonely and shunned. If they were a nation, they would be 200 million people and the world’s poorest. Their revolution still awaits."
