About
Auberle has been dedicated to the mission of caring for and healing abused, neglected and troubled children throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania for over 50 years. We have been able to help thousands of children and their families through our residential care, foster care, emergency shelter, in-home intervention, education and community programs. Family preservation, the reuniting of families in a positive home environment and preparing children to be responsible adults are the ultimate goals of Auberle. HISTORY Auberle was founded through the legacy and generosity of Pauline Auberle, a McKeesport resident who, upon her death, willed money and land to the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh to start a "Home" for boys. In 1948, the Pauline Auberle Memorial Foundation was incorporated, and in 1952, the realization of Pauline's dream took place when Auberle Home was constructed and opened its doors at 1101 Hartman Street, McKeesport, Pennsylvania. Auberle became a home for adolescent males and was known as the "Boystown of the East." For 34 years, Auberle was dedicated exclusively to providing care to boys. Services began to expand in the mid-80s with our Shelter program for younger boys and girls. SERVING MORE CHILDREN AND FAMILIES The late 1980s and early 1990s witnessed the planned growth of Auberle into new service areas. In addition to our residential programs for boys and the launching of adolescent male group homes, there was a new focus on keeping families together and providing services to girls. Auberle's In-Home Family Preservation was one of the first programs of its kind in Pennsylvania. We began a Foster Care program to provide children with families when returning to their homes was not a short-term option. During this time period, Auberle started various residential programs for girls, including semi-independent living for female adolescents. Educational support services to the McKeesport School District rounded out the new services over a five-year span. ADDRESSING MORE NEEDS From the mid-90s through today, Auberle has extended its Mission by providing more comprehensive services to more children and families in a broader geographical area. While some organizations have eliminated residential services because of the cost, we continue to do vital work with children through our Residential Care and Shelter programs. Auberle's In-Home Services, Family Reunification and Foster Care programs are now offered in several counties. We have been able to help keep 9 in 10 families together by providing needed counseling, parental training and referral services. Auberle Education Center educates more than 150 children daily from 22 school districts who were having difficulty learning and were sometimes disruptive in their former schools. We also work with students within their own schools through Auberle's Student Assistance Program. In 2004 Auberle began providing an array of professional Drug & Alcohol and Mental Health Treatment services to both children and adults, including individual, group and family therapy. In January 2006 Auberle began providing Transitional Housing in response to homeless issues of young adults 18-21. Auberle is proud of its accomplishments in serving hundreds of children and families each year and its commitment to improving communities.
