Founded in 1868 by Architect Archimedes Russell, King & King is the oldest architectural firm in New York State, and heir to a distinguished collection of buildings, both noteworthy and numerical. Melvin L. King joined Russell in 1888 and started the continuing involvement of the King family with the firm and Upstate New York architecture. The firm's name was changed in 1906 to Russell & King when Melvin was made a partner in recognition for his work on the Onondaga County Court House. The name of the firm has changed over the years as the principals have changed. It was shortened to King & King in 1955, and remains so to this day.
