Happy Hollow Park & Zoo in San Jose has been a part of Bay Area families since it opened its’ gates in 1961. With its unique combination of children’s rides, amusements, a Puppet Theater, play areas and an accredited Zoo with over 150 animals, from endangered lemurs to goats . The Park closed its gates after 46 years on July 9, 2008, for a $72 million green renovation. The scope of the project includes the renovation of the 12 acres of existing ride areas and Zoo, as well as adding 4 additional acres to the facility which include several new animal exhibits, Veterinary and commissary buildings, Education Center, Guest Services and Gift Shop, Restaurant, new parking lot and pedestrian bridge, and updates the facility to meet all ADA requirements. The New Happy Hollow combines innovative green architecture with whimsical fun and upon completion, this project will apply to become certified under the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) program.
