About
With 4th generation clients and a history that includes being the state’s oldest law firm, our attorneys understand the importance of planning for current and future generations. The firm was founded in 1832 by the first Burton Craige. He was very active in governmental affairs and served four terms in the U.S. Congress. He led the firm until his death in 1875. His sons continued the law firm and opened a new office in Winston-Salem. The firm kept both offices opened from 1917-1959 when the Salisbury office was finally closed. Currently, the most senior partner is Cowles Liipfert who joined the firm in 1964. The firm emphasizes continuing education for its attorneys, five of whom are certified specialists in their respective areas of practice. Cowles Liipfert and John Keiger are North Carolina Board Certified Specialists in Estate Planning and Probate Law, while Brent Stephens is a North Carolina Board Certified Specialist in Elder Law. Stephens has also earned the designation of Certified Elder Law Attorney by the National Elder Law Foundation. David Niblock, another partner with the firm, is a Domestic Relations Certified Mediator. The law firm is listed as among the pre-eminent law firms in North Carolina by several selective registries, such as The Law List and The Bar Registry, the latter of which is published by the Martindale-Hubbell Legal Directory. Please note that our firm does not approve of LinkedIn's use of the word "Specialties" in the "Company Specialties" section of this page. The information we provided in that section represents the various "Practice Areas" we focus on for clients.
