Gham Power is a Solar company based in Kathmandu, Nepal. Established in 2010, we have carried out over 2,000 projects with a cumulative installed capacity of over 2.5 MW. We are the first company to venture into the rural energy sector and the first to introduce pay-as-you-go services in the energy market. 7 out of the 28 million people in Nepal live without access to electricity, mostly in rural, subsistence farming communities. They use kerosene, firewood, and diesel for energy, paying costs as high as $5/kWh. Clean and affordable energy can significantly help increase local income by enabling agro-processing and irrigation, and basic services for health, education, and communication. However, integration solutions combining solar with energy-efficient appliances are rare in the market, and affordability is a big issue, increasing dependency on grants and subsidies. MFI's and banks also haven't been able to provide affordable financing because of high payment collection risk and costs. Gham Power identifies sites with high potential to run profitable agro-businesses, and provides uniquely designed low-cost Productive End Use (PEU) systems such as solar-powered water pumps, grinding mills, and cold storage, with financing from a banking or MFI partner. We also power local telecom towers and set up pre-paid meters and mobile payments. As PEU systems help boost local income generation, we then partner with our PEU customers to extend the size of their existing systems to form a microgrid. That way, we provide power to the surrounding households on a super affordable pay-as-you-go (PAYG) basis using pre-paid meters, and also make it easier for our financing partner to collect payments.
