Scottish Canals is responsible for the management and development of five canals and their surrounding estates across Scotland. The Forth & Clyde, Union, Monkland, Crinan and Caledonian canals, together extend over 137 miles from coast to coast, across country and into the cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness attracting more than 22 million visitors per year. The network is home to world renowned landmarks The Kelpies and The Falkirk Wheel. Built 200 years ago to fire the Industrial Revolution, today the canals contribute to the Scottish Government agenda of developing a Greener; Healthier; Smarter; Safer and Stronger; and Wealthier and Fairer Scotland. Scottish Canals achieves this by acting as a catalyst for sustainable economic development, regeneration and tourism, as well as contributing to education, biodiversity, heritage and the promotion of active living and healthier lifestyles.
