The Art of Yoga Project (AYP) leads at-risk, exploited and incarcerated teen girls involved in the California juvenile justice system toward accountability to self, others and community by providing practical tools to effect behavioral change.
AYP specializes in innovative gender-responsive rehabilitation using a holistic, evidence-based approach to promote girls’ self-awareness, self-respect, and self-control. We send specially-trained yoga teachers and creative arts educators into juvenile detention centers, rehabilitation facilities and alternative schools to teach a proprietary, strength-based intervention program.
The cornerstone is our proprietary Yoga and Creative Arts Curriculum which combines health education, character development, yoga, meditation and creative arts. Using the tools taught, the girls begin to identify the issues that cause them to make poor choices, manage their anger and impulses, and develop a productive outlet for their emotions and dreams. Each session begins with a rigorous, strengthening yoga practice and continues with a creative art or writing activity.
The Art of Yoga Project’s combination of yoga, mindfulness and creative arts programs delivered by well-trained, trauma-informed staff mitigates the harsh environment of incarceration, improves the girls’ mood, causes their brains to heal and self-regulate, improves their capacity for healthy relationships, and effects positive behavioral change.
AYP provides highly structured activities that teach girls pro-social skills, anger-management and emotional regulation techniques, and healthy alternatives to self-destructive behavior. We incorporate mindfulness-based practices that give girls foundational shifts in their thinking, ultimately affecting short and long-term decision-making and behaviors.
AYP was featured in a documentary shown worldwide, Yogawoman – Never Underestimate the Power of Inner Peace, narrated by Annette Bening. The Art of Yoga Project Address
