SpiritHouse Inc is a Black family centered, Black women-led, cultural arts and organizing organization. We are an intergenerational body of low wealth mothers, students, workers and family members, who believe that the strategic use of our community customs, traditions, skills, knowledge, collective healing and visioning is vital for transformative change.
We are based in Durham, NC which has been listed as the number one place to retire, the most tolerant town in the country and is home to Duke University and the Research Triangle Park. However, Durham also has some of the highest racial disparities in poverty and police stop and search data in the state. Additionally, Durham’s non-violent drug crime prison population is 6.4% white and 65.1% black, even though Blacks account for just 40% of the total population.
