In 2010, Dan Savage and his partner, Terry Miller, uttered three words that would give rise to a global movement focused on the empowerment of LGBTQ+ youth — it gets better. What began as a wildly successful social media campaign to provide hope and encouragement to young LGBTQ+ people has evolved into a major, multi-media platform capable of reaching millions of young people every year through inspiring media programming, a growing network of international affiliates, and access to an arsenal of community-based service providers. The It Gets Better Project envisions a world where all LGBTQ+ youth are free to live equally and know their worthiness and power as individuals. The It Gets Better Project fulfills its mission to uplift, empower, and connect lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) youth around the globe through storytelling and building community. It Gets Better Project received the 2012 Governor's Award from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and has garnered support from President Obama and 500,000 others who have taken the pledge to share messages of hope and to speak up against intolerance.
