About
Remaining true to it’s nonprofit mission, Community Hospice has come along way from its humble beginnings as an all volunteer organization meeting in a church basement over thirty years ago. Started in 1979 by two nurses, Mary Jean Coeur-Barron and classmate Kathy Oberg-Erlenbeck, Community Hospice was established to provide compassionate care, comfort and support to terminally ill patients and their families. The two nurses involved local hospitals, physicians, home health agencies, and community leaders in creating a local, nonprofit hospice program. Today, Community Hospice provides care to over 230 patients every day in private homes, skilled nursing facilities and at the sixteen-room Alexander Cohen Hospice House. This commitment to provide care to anyone regardless of ability to pay would not be possible without the generous contributions from the community giving through the Community Hospice Foundation and The Hope Chest Thrift Stores
