About
The original company founded by C. F. Sauer, Sr. in 1887, manufactured, packaged and sold pure flavoring extracts in five- and ten-gram cartoned bottles. The immediate success of the venture soon required more office and manufacturing space. After several interim moves, the company relocated to 2000 West Broad Street in Richmond, Virginia, where its headquarters remain to this day. Growth continued through both expansion and acquisition. In 1927, the Interstate Commerce Company was purchased, adding household drugs and remedies to the company's product line. In 1929, C.F. Sauer, Jr. completed negotiations to purchase the Duke's Products Company. The mayonnaise, salad dressings, cooking oils and other foods carrying the Dukes' brand are among the company's most successful products. In 1956, vegetable oil production was added to the company's activities. This operation produces retail and foodservice products as well as supplying oils for the company's margarine manufacturing division. Barbecue sauce joined the product line in 1967 when The C.F. Sauer Company purchased Alford's Barbecue Sauce. Today, the complete retail product line includes Sauer's Spices, Spice Mixes, Flavorings and Extracts; Sauer's Connoisseur Premium Spices, the Duke's family of cooking oils, salad dressings and sandwich spreads; Gold Medal Spices and salad products; and Sauer's Barbecue Sauce.
