The group known for selling 200 million boxes of cookies annually is the world's largest organization for girls. All told the Girl Scouts have about 2.8 million members, not to mention 940,000 adult volunteers. It is open to girls between ages 5 and 17 and strives to build character and leadership skills through projects involving technology, sports, the environment, literacy, the arts, and the sciences. The group is part of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. The nation's First Lady customarily has adopted its honorary leadership.
