Whiting-Turner Contracting is a big fish in an ocean of builders. The employee-owned firm provides construction management, general contracting, and design/build services, primarily for large commercial, institutional, and infrastructure projects in the US. It subcontracts about 85% of its volume, but its in-house activities include mechanical and electrical work, concrete forming, and foundation services. A key player in retail construction, the company also undertakes such diverse projects as biotech clean rooms, schools, stadiums, and corporate headquarters for clients like AT&T, General Motors, and the US Army. G. W. C. Whiting and LeBaron Turner founded the company in 1909 to build sewer lines.
