BARC, a member owned Electric Cooperative, located in Millboro, Virginia, serves over 12,500 consumers in Bath, Rockbridge, Alleghany, Highland and Augusta counties. With over 1950 miles of line, BARC's service territory stretches from the Blue Ridge parkway on the East to the West Virginia line.
As a member owned Electric Cooperative, BARC operates on money borrowed from the Rural Utilities Service, which is a branch of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and on margins earned from its member owners. These margins are allocated to the members based on their usage at the end of each year and returned to the member over time. As member owners, the folks who pay the bills have a say in how the co-op operates through the Board of Directors.
