About
Chadwick School sits atop a hill on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Founded in 1935 by Virginia Chadwick, its fifty-five acre campus provides a setting conducive to serious study, vigorous play and companionship among friends. Chadwick draws students from a wide geographical area including Long Beach, the South Bay communities and West Los Angeles. We are committed to maintaining a student body of 750 that is economically, socially and ethnically diverse. The School is segmented into three educational divisions: the Village, Kindergarten through grade 6, the Middle School, grades 7 and 8, and the Upper School, grades 9 through 12. While each division has its own director, classrooms and special area of campus, the curriculum is coordinated for smooth transitions between divisions. All of the children have access to the Leavenworth Library, the gymnasium, pool and playing fields, amphitheater and the cafeteria. The mission of Chadwick's faculty, staff and administration is to engage the students in active learning, enabling them to make the most of their daily educational opportunities. In doing so, each student is preparing for the next level in his or her education, whether that step is into the first grade at Chadwick of into the first year of college. Working with a sequential curriculum, Chadwick's educational team seeks to inspire students to persevere toward their educational goals and to challenge them toward greater intellectual and ethical growth. Regardless of the grade level, the student experiences a sense of accomplishment through the kind of hard work that builds self-confidence and leads to the pursuit of learning for its own sake. Through a progressive blend of support and demand, teachers seek to transform students from dependent individuals at the lower grade levels into independent lifelong learners stepping into their future. Chadwick also provides programs where students learn valuable life skills. In athletics, the tennis player who calls a close, decisive shot in his or her opponent's favor learns the meaning of personal integrity. The student who on an Outdoor Education trip overcomes fear, follows the instructor's directions, and rappels down the face of a sixty-foot cliff experiencing firsthand those qualities we call trust and courage. Students in community service tutor disabled children or work in a soup kitchen soon realize that the real world does not conform to the stereotypes of popular culture. Working together with parents, Chadwick's faculty and staff strive to provide a learning environment that encourages each individual child to reach their potential both inside and outside of the classroom. Chadwick's educational philosophy and commitment to character development address the whole student by offering valuable life skills. The lessons of personal integrity, trust and courage, and extending beyond one's self are as important as the mastery of the academic curricula; together these elements will enable the student to venture into the world.
