Herman Chanen founded Chanen Construction Company, Inc. in 1955 with a borrowed $1,000 and developed it into one of the largest privately-held general contracting and construction management firms in the Southwest. In its 49 years of operation, Chanen has erected many of the landmark structures that shape the modern skyline of Phoenix. Within its first decade, Chanen Construction Company co-developed the tallest high-rise office of that time in downtown Phoenix and built projects such as Terminal 2 at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The company's association with the Phoenix airport continued with the construction management of the massive, seven-story, $280 million Terminal 4 and the relocation of the Arizona Air National Guard and the recently completed third runway. Over the years, Chanen has built major projects for clients including the State of Arizona; the City of Phoenix; Howard Hughes Properties, Inc.; America West Airlines; McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Company; Motorola, Inc.; Intel Corporation; Warner Bros. and Phoenix Newspapers, Inc. The company has also built multi-million dollar projects outside Arizona in locations as diverse as Florida, Washington, Oklahoma, Alaska and California.
