About
Dr. Eustace Semmes was among the first graduating class of neurosurgeons at Johns Hopkins University taught by Harvey Cushing, M.D., the recognized father of modern neurosurgery. Dr. Semmes was named Professor of Neurosurgery in 1932 at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Francis Murphey joined Dr. Semmes just prior to World War II and they entered the practice of neurosurgery directly afterwards. Dr. E.C. Schultz joined in 1948 and Dr. R. L. DeSaussure was added in 1950. The group operated as a partnership until 1961 at which time it was incorporated. Dr. Schultz suggested the name of the Clinic and the primary purpose for the incorporation was to enable the Clinic to establish a retirement plan for the medical staff and employees. Since that time other physicians and staff have been added in the specialties of neurological surgery, neurology, physiatry, anesthesiology/pain management, and neuropsychology. Permanent offices have been established in Memphis and Jackson, Tennessee, as well as Florence, Alabama. Out patient clinics are operated in Union City and Lawrenceburg, Tennessee; Grenada, Corinth, and Iuka Mississippi; Poplar Bluff, Missouri; and West Memphis, Arkansas. Physicians, both neurosurgeons and neurologists, travel to the outpatient clinics by airplane or automobile one day per week to provide patient care at these sites.
