About
The Stadium Theatre Performing Arts Centre is a 1,100 seat theatre located in Woonsocket, RI. It was built in 1926, during that time three shows were held per day. By the 1970’s the high costs of entertainment and the advent of multiplexes forced the theater to close. Attempts were made to revive the grand Stadium, but to no avail. The theatre closed for good in 1985. In 1991 a group of devoted community activists raised over three million dollars to fund the restoration of the theatre. Through their commitment and perseverance they succeeded. Today the Theater is a majestic example of Vaudeville splendor. The Theatre has since developed into a community center, where international artists grace the same stage as local community arts organizations. To maintain an annual active arts presentation, the theatre management books shows as well as rents the theatre. Last season the theatre hosted over 150 events presented to over 80,000 patrons from all over the Southern New England Area. Today over 200 volunteers and a small administrative staff operate this magnificent theatre. Patrons, who may never experience world-class performances, can do so at affordable prices. The Stadium Theatre Performing Arts Centre is the largest performing arts organization in Northern Rhode Island, and a pivotal anchor to the revitalization of the downtown district of Woonsocket.
