About
Toberman Neighborhood Center was founded in 1903 by James and Emma Toberman as a memorial to their only son, Homer. The Toberman’s came to Los Angeles in 1872 under Abraham Lincoln’s direction and James Toberman served as Mayor of Los Angeles from 1872-1874. Toberman has a long history of service as an infirmary, a residence for single women, as well as youth development and prevention services. After moving locations from Echo Park and Boyle Heights, in 1937 Toberman moved to the Barton Hill Community in San Pedro, where it stands today. In October of 2007, Toberman welcomed the grand opening of its new 36,000 square foot campus and officially became Toberman Neighborhood Center.
