About
The American Society of Radiologic Technologists is the world's largest radiologic science organization. Founded in Chicago in 1920, the business office is now located in Albuquerque, N.M., and houses approximately 90 employees. Our principal customers are our members — 112,000 radiologic technologists throughout the United States and overseas. Our customers include the profession as a whole, other health care providers, patients and the public. The ASRT provides its members with educational opportunities, promotes radiologic technology as a career and monitors state and federal legislation that affects the profession. The Society's Board of Directors, 234-member House of Delegates, volunteer committee members and staff are responsible for establishing standards of practice, educational curricula and entry-level standards for the profession. The ASRT also has affiliate relationships with 54 state or local societies for radiologic technologists. These affiliate societies operate independently of the national organization, governed by their own officers and boards, with ASRT's assistance and guidance upon request. The ASRT conducts two national educational conferences annually. It also publishes two peer-reviewed research journals and a monthly newsmagazine. ASRT's members, radiologic technologists, are the medical personnel who perform diagnostic imaging examinations and deliver radiation therapy treatments. They may specialize in a specific area of radiologic technology, such as computed tomography, mammography, magnetic resonance, medical dosimetry, nuclear medicine, sonography, cardiovascular- interventional technology, radiation therapy or diagnostic radiography. Other ASRT members are managers and educators. Active members of ASRT must be registered radiologic technologists. To become registered, an individual must complete an accredited educational program in the radiologic sciences and pass a national certification examination. Registered radiologic technologists also must earn 24 continuing education credits every two years, ensuring that they stay up-to-date with the technological changes in their profession.
