About
Before your clinic visit You may get a pre-visit telephone call from one of our staff to collect medical information prior to your visit. You will also likely receive a phone call reminding you about your appointment. As you prepare for your visit, please refer to this list of items to bring, or any other list of items to bring you may receive from the clinic. Pre-visit information (new patients) If you are a new patient, you will receive a packet of information in the mail. It will have details about the clinic location, parking, when to arrive and what to bring, if applicable. We may ask you to arrive 15 minutes early to ensure you have enough time to register and fill out any necessary forms. When you first arrive When you arrive for your clinic appointment, you will be greeted by a receptionist who will verify your appointment, review your insurance information, and collect your co-pay and referral form if necessary. If you have questions, the receptionist will help you get answers. Preparing for your examination In most clinics, a nurse or medical assistant will greet you and take you to an exam room. He or she will help you prepare to see your physician. Your exam with the physician Your first visit is usually an exam and consultation, which will last about 30 to 45 minutes, or longer for some specialties. You may also need to see additional specialists or have tests, so please reserve some extra time for your first appointment. It’s a good idea to come prepared with a list of questions to ask your physician. Our clinics are also teaching facilities. When you meet with your doctor, a medical student or physician-in-training may also be present and may ask you a few questions. Insurance and billing Please check with your insurance company about your benefits. Some insurance plans provide different coverage levels for services at the University of Minnesota Medical Center clinics. Following your appointment, you may receive two bills: one from Fairview Health Services for the exam room, nursing time and any tests or treatments, and another from University of Minnesota Physicians for the doctor/provider. For questions about billing, please call 763-782-6500. If you need to cancel We know that sometimes things change and you won’t be able to make your appointment. If this happens, please let us know as soon as possible so we can offer that time to another patient. Call 612-672-7422 or your clinic to cancel.
