Recounting the history of the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System can be compared to the parable of the mustard seed. "Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and perch in its branches." More than 90 years ago, six Franciscan sisters set sail for America. They came with meager personal belongings and very little money, enduring personal hardships and cultural barriers on a mission to bring health and spiritual wholeness to the sick and needy of Louisiana. Today, more than 6,500 women and men go forth in their name to perpetuate the healing ministry of Jesus Christ, inspired by the faith, skill and determination of those founding sisters.
