About
First Volunteer Bank first opened its doors as Marion Trust and Banking in 1904. Since then, First Volunteer Bank has grown to a 22 branch bank serving Eastern and Middle Tennessee. In 1980 Marion Bancshares purchased Marion Trust & Banking Company. During the year 1986 Marion Bancshares acquired both Fentress County Bank and First State Bank located in Campbell County. That same year the holding company decided to change its name to Community Group, Inc. The following year Community Group, Inc. obtained Community Bank & Trust in Lawrenceburg, TN. Volunteer Bank & Trust Company was bought in 1992 and McMinn Bank & Trust in 1995. Community Group, Inc. changed its name to First Volunteer Corporation in 1999; that same year every branch changed its name to First Volunteer Bank of the Region they served. The new millennium brought change into the Corporation. First Volunteer purchased Carter-Wilson-Hewgley Insurance Agency located in South Pittsburg, Tennessee, thus creating First Volunteer Insurance Agency. First Volunteer Bank moved its headquarters from Jasper to Chattanooga and opened a new branch that year in Cookeville. First Volunteer Corporation decided that all five separate regional companies would merge and become one bank company by the end of 2001. The merging of all community banks was finalized in July 2001, with each location now under one name: First Volunteer Bank of Tennessee. The year also brought about the purchase of a Monterey, Tennessee location and the opening of our Knoxville location. During 2003 and 2004, First Volunteer Bank opened a new location in Chattanooga, and First Volunteer Insurance Agency purchased Chattanooga Insurance Agency. In 2007 First Volunteer purchased Benton Banking Company in Polk County. The purchase included three full service branches and two in-store branches. The branches were converted to First Volunteer Bank in October 2008. Today First Volunteer Bank remains focused on being the number one multi-market community bank for Eastern and Middle Tennessee. The bank is led by President and CEO Patti W. Steele, a twenty year banking veteran. The bank's mission remains the same today as it did in its inception - focus on the customer. And with the customer in mind, the bank adopted the tag line "The Bank with Personality" in 2003. That tag line has become much more than a tag line; it has become a brand that exemplifies how the employees interact with customers and the communities we serve.
