The Attorney General serves as the chief legal officer of the State of Missouri. The Attorney General is mandated by our constitution and elected by the people of Missouri. The Attorney General’s Office represents and provides legal advice to most state agencies; defends challenges to the validity of state laws; enforces civil law, including consumer protection and environmental laws; defends the State’s interest in civil actions, including bankruptcies, workers’ compensation claims, professional licensing cases, and habeas corpus actions filed by state and federal inmates; and serves as a special prosecutor in criminal cases when appointed. In addition, the Office handles all appeals statewide from felony convictions. ATTORNEY GENERAL JOSHUA D. HAWLEY Attorney General Josh Hawley was elected as the 42nd Attorney General for the State of Missouri on Nov. 8, 2016. He was officially sworn into office on Jan. 9, 2017. Hawley is a conservative constitutional attorney and the first Republican Attorney General in Missouri since 1993. He has litigated in the Supreme Court of the United States, most of the federal courts of appeals, federal district courts and state courts across the country. Hawley is also a former professor of law at the University of Missouri.
