Mr. Harris serves on the Board of Directors for Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network. Based in Elmhurst, Ill., Gift of Hope is the federally designated not-for-profit organ procurement organization (OPO) that coordinates organ and tissue donation and services to families of donors in the northern three-quarters of Illinois and northwest Indiana. As one of 58 organ procurement organizations that make up the nation's organ donation system, Gift of Hope works with 183 hospitals and serves 11.7 million residents in its donation service area. Mr. Harris established the Mary D. Harris Memorial Foundation in memory of his wife, who died in 1997 while awaiting a double-lung transplant due to pulmonary fibrosis. The foundation is dedicated to helping find a cure for pulmonary fibrosis, improving the lives of individuals with the disease, and promoting the awareness of the need for organ and tissue donation. In 2001, the organization was a founding member of the Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis, a national alliance of patients, their families, physicians, researchers and lung health advocates dedicated to furthering education, patient support and research efforts for pulmonary fibrosis. He holds a law degree from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., and a bachelor's degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
