About
The Museum's mission and vision, revised and approved by the Board of Directors in 1999, is as follows: Our mission is to record, preserve and tell the stories of Hawai`i and the Pacific, inspiring our guests to embrace and experience our natural and cultural world. We will tell the full story of Hawai`i in relationship to its place in the Pacific, and the world, and we will make Hawai`i aware of the world around us. These stories will be told through a network of public museums and learning centers that provide personal experiences that are engaging and relevant. To present these stories, we will use collections, research, information, educational programs, and publications in collaboration with expertise available in the community. Bishop Museum will rank with the best museums in the world. Designated the State Museum on Natural and Cultural History in 1988, Bishop Museum is a place where families can learn about their island heritage and discover the wonders of science through fun, hands-on exhibits and programs. It is also a tour destination where people from around the world learn about our multicultural and diverse communities. More than 300,000 children and families visit Bishop Museum each year. Nearly half the schoolchildren in the state annually visit and benefit from the informal learning process of interactive, educational displays. In addition, the Museum continues to develop and maintain outreach programs for both the neighbor island communities & other national venues.
