Turtle Wax would be one of those kitchen-table success stories except Ben and Marie Hirsch concocted their car polish in the bathtub. In the 1950s they changed the name of their Plastone Polish to Super Hard Shell and renamed their company Turtle Wax. Now led by their daughter, chairman Sondra Healy, the family-owned company makes more than 1,250 products including car waxes, polishes, and cleaners. Company brands include Turtle Wax and Finish 2001, as well as the CD-2 line of engine treatments, vinyl and leather protectants, and odor removers. Turtle Wax also supplies bulk chemicals for the car-wash industry and operates about 20 car washes in Chicago and Kansas City.
