In 1937, seven faculty members adopted the credit union philosophy and founded the University of Nebraska Federal Credit Union. The founders sent out letters to faculty members encouraging participation. NUFCU attracted Depression-weary professors and those who were rejected by banks. Joining a credit union seemed a better alternative to loan sharks..
NUFCU operated from a faculty member’s desk drawer for the first five years, then moved to the Dairy Building on East Campus in 1943, to Agricultural Hall six years later, to the Faculty Club on City Campus in 1969, to the 501 building prior to construction of the Wick Alumni Center and finally to 1630 Q Street in 1985. In 1997, NUFCU opened another branch at 301 N 52nd Street and in July 2012, the main location moved to 1720 P Street.
In 2017 the credit union grew and added a loan office in Kearney, NE to serve the University of Nebraska-Kearney community. The office is located at 124 W 46th Street, Ste. 203.
Today, NUFCU has over 11,100 members and over $100 million in assets. It offers mobile banking, online banking, checking and savings accounts, credit cards, consumer loans, mortgage loans, business loans, online bill pay and many other services. Individuals eligible for membership include faculty, staff, students, alumni and volunteers on any University of Nebraska campus; and their families.
