About
KFA reshapes LA by designing great places where people flourish. We know and love Los Angeles like no other place. We are proud to have contributed to the fabric of this beautiful city. KFA provides architecture, design, and master planning services for projects throughout the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area using a collaborative approach with each project. The firm’s expertise encompasses transit-oriented developments; mixed-use housing, retail, and office projects; affordable, senior, family, and special-needs housing; hotels and restaurants; educational facilities; and adaptive reuse projects. We understand the importance of designs that synthesize beauty, marketability, durability, and cost efficiency. KFA is a trustworthy family of creative problem solvers and great listeners. We are people before we are architects, and that mindset resonates with our clients and colleagues. It is the collaborative process that makes our projects great, inside and outside our office. In 1975, Wade Killefer, FAIA founded the design-build firm that was to become Killefer Flammang Architects. Barbara Flammang, AIA joined him in 1980, and the firm designed its first library in 1983, first school in 1985, first affordable housing project in 1988, and first mixed-use residential project in 1990. In the late 1990’s, KFA helped to spark the resurgence of the historic core in downtown Los Angeles. We designed the first three buildings under LA’s Adaptive Reuse Ordinance in the Old Bank District, and have since rehabilitated over 40 historic buildings throughout the City. In addition to the adaptive reuse work, KFA has completed dozens of new construction mixed-use, market-rate housing projects, hotels, creative office, and campus master plan projects. We have also designed over 4,000 units of affordable housing in 57 different buildings for 27 different affordable housing developers in Los Angeles County. Twelve of these projects, containing over 1,000 units, are on Skid Row. We are currently designing 12 new affordable housing projects, bringing over 600 new units of housing for low-income individuals and families, including seniors, veterans, and the homeless. In 2015, KFA marked its 40th anniversary, celebrating the colleagues with whom we have worked and the clients who have challenged us to think big and get things right. Later in the year, we announced three new partners: Jonathan Watts, AIA joined longtime principals Lise Bornstein, AIA and John Arnold, AIA as partners to expand KFA’s 43-year legacy of reshaping Los Angeles. The firm has received numerous awards and recognition for its diverse, forward-thinking architecture, and in 2016, KFA was honored with the prestigious AIA California Council Firm Award.
