About
The mission of the Indianapolis Zoological Society is to advocate, cultivate, and celebrate a reverence for all living things. The IZS protects and preserves plants and animals through research and conservation and inspires stewardship, caring and discovery through entertaining exhibits and educational programs. Since opening in 1964, the Indianapolis Zoo has been a leader in the movement transforming zoos from places simply to view animals into institutions also dedicated to conservation and education. The Indianapolis Zoo has grown into a world-renowned facility, the first to be accredited as a zoo, an aquarium and a botanical garden. It is home to almost 4,000 animals, including 16 species that are endangered and six that are threatened. Its sister institution, White River Gardens, opened in 1999 and hosts dynamic seasonal shows inside its conservatory, along with providing some of the most beautiful outdoor gardens in the country.
