About
Rochester Clinical Research was founded in 1994 by Nurse Practitioner Patricia Larrabee, with the assistance of Dr. Mervyn Weerasinghe. Ms. Larrabee continues as the Chief Executive Officer of RCR, and Dr. Weerasinghe is the Medical Director. Conveniently located near the intersection of Route 590 and Empire Boulevard, Rochester Clinical Research has a staff of 30 employees, including 2 nurse practitioners, 10 nurses, and a registered dietitian. We also have 4 physician consultants. Our spacious 9,600 square foot office is decorated with beautiful quilts made by several of our staff members. The majorities of our studies are Phase III clinical trials, with medications that have already undergone testing in humans, and are in the last stages of study prior to FDA consideration for approval. Volunteers in our studies receive free medical care and medicines, and are provided a monetary stipend to compensate for their time and travel. Our trials range from being just six weeks duration, to as long as a several years. Currently, we are performing clinical trials on new medications for weight loss, osteoarthritis, hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, and smoking cessation, as well as vaccines for influenza. We maintain close working relationships with our volunteers' primary care providers by sending regular updates, letters, and lab results. Most of our studies are "placebo controlled", meaning some patients will receive a placebo rather than the study medication. Most of our studies are also "double-blinded", meaning neither we nor the volunteer know whether they are receiving study medication or placebo. After the completion of the study and once we are notified by the sponsor of the study, we send patients a letter informing them whether they received the study medication or placebo. Why participate in clinical research studies? Most of our volunteers are motivated by altruism - a desire to help others that have their disease. Others are hoping to receive a new and more effective treatment than what is currently available. Most of our patients value the extra time our medical staff and dietician spend with them providing medical care and education about their condition. Our volunteers appreciate the efficiency and short waiting times in our office, such that our patients have given us a 97% approval rating, and all of our patients welcome the monetary stipend, compensating them for their time and travel.
