Founded in 1879, Florida Memorial College, an Historically Black College related to the Baptist Church & its traditions, is one of the oldest academic centers in Florida. It began as the Florida Baptist Institute in Live Oak,Florida & the Florida Baptist Academy, founded in 1892 in Jacksonville, Florida. It was in Jacksonville that faculty member J. Rosamond Johnson & his brother James Weldon Johnson co-wrote "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing.” In 1941, the school in Live Oak & the school in St. Augustine merged & formed the Florida Normal and Industrial Memorial College, becoming a four-year institution in 1945. In 1963, the name was changed to Florida Memorial College, and in 1968, the college moved to Miami, Florida, where it remains today. The College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and currently offers thirty-eight degree programs through its seven academic divisions. Several of its academic programs are accredited by such prestigious national organizations as the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSB) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The College is located at 15800 N.W. 42nd Avenue in northwest Miami-Dade.
