About
Block Institute wants what every parent wants for their child. A supportive circle of friends. The ability to care for oneself. A feeling of purpose. In other words, to be an active participant in their own lives. Given the right opportunity and care, it's amazing what people can achieve through hard work and determination. We witness it every day. Since 1962, Block Institute has been dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. The agency's programs were formerly known as the Brooklyn School for Special Children (BSSC), Community Residential Opportunities for Handicapped (CROH), and Training & Rehabilitation in Useful Service (TRIUS). Based in Brooklyn, New York, we provide unique and individualized services to children and adults with disabilities who reside within the five boroughs of New York City. Our programs include Educational Services, Adult Day Services, Vocational Services and Residential Services, as well as Medicaid Service Coordination and Clinical Services. Block Institute provides services to approximately 1,400 individuals each year, including children with special needs enrolled in Education Services, adults in our Day Services programs, and adults in Residential Services. Individuals that qualify to receive services at Block Institute are those who have been diagnosed with a developmental disability prior to the age of 21 years. Diagnoses which fall within the realm of a developmental disability include Autism Spectrum Disorder, Pervasive Developmental Disorders, Learning and Attentional Disorders, Emotional and Behavioral Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Speech and Language Disorders, Global Developmental Delays, Intellectual or Cognitive delays, Traumatic Brain Injury, and individuals who present with a cognitive delay and are deemed to be medically fragile or medically involved. The Executive Director of Block Institute is Dr. Scott Barkin, a New York State Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Certified School Psychologist with twenty-five years experience in public education and programs for special needs children and adults. Our staff of 475 people consists of the most talented and dedicated professionals in their fields. These include New York State Certified Special Education Teachers, Occupational, Physical and Speech Therapists, Social Workers, Psychologists, Registered Dieticians and Nurses. Programs and services are overseen by a highly qualified and experienced team of administrators, program directors and a Medical Director that ensures the appropriate delivery of quality services.
