About
The Kirk Williams Company was founded by James "Kirk" Williams, Sr., in 1949. The company began as a specialty sheet metal fabricator, manufacturing items such as electric boxes, troughs, and machinery and belt guards out of a small shop on the corner of Third and Chestnut in downtown Columbus, Ohio. Over time, specialty fabrication gave rise to ductwork and hoods with commercial and industrial applications. Kirk invited his son, James K. Williams, Jr.”"better known as Jim”"to join the company instead of pursuing college. Jim started at a low-level laborer position in the fabrication shop and learned the nature of the business until he was drafted into the U.S. Army to serve for two years in the Korean Conflict. Kirk's son-in-law, John Ubbing, joined the company while Jim was gone. The Kirk Williams Company was incorporated on January 1, 1954, shortly after Jim's return. Kirk, Jim, and John were the foundation responsible for fostering and growing The Kirk Williams Company. In 1961, The Kirk Williams Company seized the opportunity to grow and built a new, state-of-the-art, 15,000-square-foot manufacturing facility on Silver Drive at Interstate 71 in northern Columbus. This substantial investment in plant and automated fabrication equipment was prominently featured in an article titled "Tomorrow's Shop Now" in Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor magazine. The new facility allowed The Kirk Williams Company greater flexibility and capacity, fueling growth in both the number and size of projects. In 1971, Jim's son, James K. Williams III”"or "J.K."”"began working summers as a laborer in the fabrication shop, just as his father had 22 years before. J.K. began working at the company full-time after his 1976 graduation from the Xavier University. In 1974, The Kirk Williams Company made another substantial investment as it designed and built a new manufacturing facility with more than 44,000 square feet and four overhead cranes on more than six acres in Grove City, Ohio, just south of Columbus on Home Road and Interstate 270. The Kirk Williams Company is currently located at this facility, which houses its large and small sheet metal and piping fabrication. The company made a conscious effort to grow in automotive and industrial projects as a result of the thriving commercial business in the early 1990s. The Kirk Williams Company began to pursue private automotive and industrial work as a diversification and risk-mitigation strategy to become less reliant on the cyclical plan and spec market. Since then, Kirk Williams has serviced many domestic and international leaders in automotive and industrial manufacturing and takes great pride in having these clients as repeat customers.
